"What Use Are Humans in the AI Era?" When AI can do everything, why do humans still matter?

AI takes labor, knowledge, content, even companionship—and the old answers to why humans matter. Human value isn't being smarter, harder-working or more creative than AI, but deciding why to live, what is worth doing, and bearing the choice. AI computes costs and returns, not "worth." Human value lies in having your own goals, making your own choices, owning consequences, and loving real people.

AI is smarter than you, more diligent than you, cheaper than you, writes code faster than you, makes plans better than you, and may even understand better than you how to comfort a person…
Why are humans still worth being needed?

In the previous seven episodes, we have actually been dismantling one thing throughout.

What AI took away first was labour.
In the past, being able to write code, do design, and analyse data was a capability.
Later, AI told you: I can do these too.

Then we said, well, knowledge must be the value.
But it turned out that the knowledge AI possesses may exceed what a person can encounter in a lifetime.

We then said, well, content must surely count.
But AI can generate countless articles, videos, and images in a day.
Even now, companionship itself is being redefined by AI.

You will notice a very interesting shift:

AI is not taking away people's jobs bit by bit – it is taking away the old answers to "why are people valuable."

So what do humans actually have left?

01The Real Answer May Not Be "Creativity"

The real answer may not be "creativity."
Because AI is becoming increasingly good at creating too.
Nor is it "intelligence."
Because in many things in the future, AI may truly be smarter than the vast majority of people.
Even less is it "working harder than AI."
That itself is an unwinnable race.

The value of humans may lie precisely in something AI finds very hard to accomplish for you:

Deciding what you live for, what is worth doing, and what you are willing to bear for that choice.

You can let AI analyse a hundred entrepreneurial directions for you.
But which one you ultimately choose – that is your business.
You can let AI plan your life for you.
But what kind of life you are willing to live – that is your business.
You can let AI help you make money, write code, build products, and run a company.
But what kind of person you want to become, who you want to live with, and how much time you are willing to devote to these things –
these are not calculation problems.

Because what truly matters in life has never been "which option is optimal."

Sometimes a father is willing to have dinner with his child every day, not because it is the most efficient choice.
A founder knows clearly that starting a business is hard, yet still decides to keep going – it is not necessarily because AI has calculated the highest return.
A person is willing to spend ten years doing something that does not seem very profitable, perhaps simply because –

he feels it is worth it.

And the word "worth it" is itself a value judgment.

02AI Finds It Hard to Decide for You: What Is Worth Exchanging Your Life For

AI can help you calculate cost, benefit, probability, and risk.
But it finds it very hard to decide for you:

what is worth exchanging your life for.

So what is truly happening in the AI era is not "humans being replaced by machines."
Rather, we are finally forced to face a question:

If I do not prove myself through "what I know" and "how much work I can do," then who am I?

03What Will Truly Be Scarce in the Future Are the Things That Cannot Simply Be Measured by Efficiency

In the past, a person's value was easily quantified.
How much code you write a month, how many projects you do, how much revenue you create.
But once AI pushes production efficiency to a new height, simply "doing more" may become increasingly meaningless.

What will truly be scarce in the future may be things that cannot simply be measured by efficiency:

your judgment.your choices.your responsibility.the life you have truly lived.and the relationships you have truly built with another person.

So the stronger AI becomes, the more humans should step out of the "production machine."
Not to compete with AI over who is better at doing the work, but to learn to decide – what things are worth letting AI do.

AI can help you live your life more efficiently.
But it cannot decide for you:

why you want to live such a life.

This may be the true value of humans in the AI era.
Not being smarter than AI.
But rather –

you have your own goals, you make your own choices, you bear your own consequences, you love real people, and you are willing to pay with a real life for what you believe is worth it.

04"Why Do Humans Do This Thing?"

So, if we must answer the question from the very beginning of this series:
AI can do everything – what use are humans?

The answer is:

AI will make "what humans can do" less and less important. But it will make another question more and more important:"Why do humans do this thing?"

And this question may be the most important human question we leave to the future.
